Janez Prepares for Harvest
The program of the event is mostly based on the demonstrations of the old way of mowing and the competition in mowing with a scythe. The girls – who rake – make sure that the meadow is nicely raked at the end and the piles are exemplarily shaped.
In the evening, it is time for a good party. The event takes place on the third Sunday in May and is organized by the Sovodenj Tourist Association.

The traditional event “Janez Prepares for Harvest” (“Janez že kleplje”) tells the story of peasant work in our past – when on the waking morning, the pounding of a scythe was still heard and the mowers started mowing the hill already in the morning fog – when the times were really different. In Nova Oselica, they are trying to present us a part of these times, where they are preserving the tradition of mowing in the old way. The event focuses on the competition part in mowing and raking and also makes the visitors have a good laugh. In any case, the mowers are differently resourceful and skilful and take care of the diversity of the event. The event always concludes with a party featuring a famous ensemble.
